Startup monthly report template for incubation centres

What an incubation centre should collect from each startup every month: money, runway, customers, team, product, patents, funding and grants, and how to collect it.

A startup monthly report is a short update each incubated startup sends its incubation centre every month. It gives the centre the numbers it needs for funders and boards, and an early warning when a startup is in trouble.

What to ask every month

  1. Details: confirm the startup’s record: name, registration numbers, sector, stage and city.
  2. Money: cash in the bank at month end, money burned in the month, revenue, and profit or loss.
  3. Customers: paying customers and pilots.
  4. Team and jobs: people employed and jobs created.
  5. Product: what shipped and what is next.
  6. Patents: applications filed and granted.
  7. Funding: money raised and conversations under way.
  8. Grant money: grants received and used.
  9. How it went: what went well, what did not, where the founder needs help, and the focus for next month.

Work out runway, do not ask for it

Runway is how many months the cash in the bank lasts at the current burn: cash divided by monthly net burn. Asking founders to type it invites guesses. Work it out from the two figures they already gave you.

How to get founders to actually send it

  • Keep it short, and start each report from last month’s figures.
  • Let founders fill it in from their own login, on their phone.
  • Remind them automatically, and show the centre who has not sent it.
  • Give something back, such as an investor update written from the same figures.

How Incubate360 does it

Founders file the report above in nine short steps from their own login. Runway is worked out for them, the centre sees every report as it arrives, and the founder gets an investor update ready to share. See startup portfolio management.
